Korn- und Edelobstbrennerei Schlitzer: Enjoyment backed by history

The foundation stone was laid in 1585 by Count Eustach von Schlitz, who first brewed beer in the little village of Sandlofs – today a district of the town of Schlitz. In 1616, a distillery was built next to the brewery, and then a good 100 years later a new building was constructed at the Auerhahn brewery, as it was called back then. It is documented that the Counts of Schlitz owned the distilling rights from 1732. Over centuries, grain spirit was made from regional wheat in this area. In the 1950s, the distillery was relocated to its present-day site, the former count’s sheep farm. In 1969, the Graf Görtz’sche Kornbrennerei along with the Karlshof was transferred to the ownership of the state of Hesse and was a state enterprise until 30 September 2006. In 2006, the town of Schlitz bought the company and founded Schlitzer Korn- und Edelobstbrennerei GmbH, with Schlitz (90%) and Hünfeld (10%) as stakeholders.

The product range is comprised of grain and fine fruit brandies, as well as fruit and herb liqueurs, and since the beginning of the 1980s also whisky. Managing Director Tobias Wiedelbach and his team continue to create the finest brandies at the same site, even though the head office and owners have changed. Many of the products draw on centuries-old recipes. The long-established distillery in the picturesque castle town is also a worthwhile tourist destination. Guided tours take you through the grain and whisky distillery, distillation, storage cellar, fine fruit distillery and bottling plant, showing the varied world of distilling. The outlet sales point has been newly designed, using original Schlitz barrels.

At the World Spirits Award, Milde Himbeere (raspberry) achieved gold, while Whisky Liqueur and Burgen Dry Gin achieved silver.

Edelkorn-Brennerei Jos. Rosche: We are happily distilling for you!

In the oldest town in Emsland, the Rosche family have been using their own grain for the finest distillate to make fine Korn (grain distillates), fruit brandies and liqueurs since 1792. The fine fragrance and the mild taste of wheat and malt are already present during the course of the 36-hour fine distillation process. The best water from Haselünne is added to achieve the desired drinking strength, and then the distillates mature in stoneware or stainless-steel containers. By storing Emsland’s cultural treasure in wooden barrels which previously held brandies or wines, it is united with aromas from around the world: as a single cask edition of ‘Edelkorn Generation 5’ or as ‘Joe’s Best’, every drop is a treat. The latest product is ‘HOPE’ – a London Dry Gin with a light hint of hops.

Since 1986, the company has been directed by Joe Rosche, representing the fifth generation of the family. He is the co-founder of the ‘Bund deutscher Edelkorn-Brenner’ (German Korn distillers) and co-initiator of the ‘protected declaration of origin’ for Haselünner Korn at the EU level. The ‘Korn Academy’ which he founded is an entertaining but educational plant tour. He uses it as a way to create many thousands of fine craft Korn enthusiasts every year. Susanne and Joe are also socio-politically engaged and support worldwide water projects in particular. Climate protection in the region is especially dear to their hearts and they use returnable bottles for the majority of their spirits.

The World Class Distillery 2024 received double gold for de la Roche, gold for Edelkorn Generation 5 matured in a whisky barrel, Rosche Haselünner Korn, Joe’s Best 35 – aged Korn stored in a whisky barrel, Edelkorn Generation 5 matured in a port barrel and Edelkorn Generation 5 matured in a Sauternes barrel, and silver for Hope London Dry Gin and Uralter.

Rhumerie de Chamarel - Rhumerie de Chamarel – A newcomer with vision

This high-quality rum from the island of Mauritius is produced in line with ecological guidelines. The products are distributed in Austria by the company Wind GmbH, based in Traiskirchen (www.wind-plast.at).

The road leads through extensive pineapple plantations and fields of sugar cane up to the distillery at an altitude of 300 m in the South-West of the island. Designed by a renowned architect, the building is elegant and authentic and a fine example of modern construction with its natural materials such as wood, stone and water. The comprehensive concept also incorporates the L’Alchimiste restaurant where up to 80 guests can savour the sophisticated regional cuisine. At the “Sugar Cane Spirit” boutique, various types of rum are on offer (White Rum, Le Coeur de Chauffe (fine brandy), Rum Paille (stored in wooden casks), Rum Arrange (flavoured with fruits and spices) as well as an exclusive clothing range, hand-made products and a small jewellery collection.

The location and climate of the fertile valley promote the growth and quality of the sugarcane. The sugarcane is harvested by hand in the early hours of the morning and processed at the mill within four hours. The fields are not normally burnt, as is usually the case, to make harvesting easier. Even when distilling at the highest modern levels of technology, nothing is wasted: the bagasse – the fibrous remnants of the sugar production process – is burnt to obtain energy. The chimney contains the very latest smoke filters and the ash is used to fertilise the fields.

The company yet again impressed at the World-Spirits Award, with one gold and four silvers.

Kweichow Moutai: China’s ‘national schnapps’ on the rise

Baijiu is the most popular alcoholic drink in China and Moutai the most famous brand, with a similar status to vodka in Russia or tequila in Mexico. Its origins go back over 2,000 years to the time of Emperor Wu of Han. These days, the national drink is frequently served at official state banquets and is used as the official state gift. Its protected source is the village of Maotai in the Guizhou province on the banks of the Chishui, the Red River. These days, more than 30,000 tons of the 53 percent alcohol Moutai are produced. In cooperation with Camus, a limited edition was launched as an homage to the greatest poets: after Li Bai in 2013, Du Fu followed in 2018. The elegant bottle showing a painting of a poem is made from the finest porcelain.

Traditional methods are used for the distillation of regional raw materials: organic sorghum and wheat and the best water. Fermentation takes place at high temperatures. During the production process, which takes a year, fresh grain is added twice to the boilers, then several boiling and fermentation processes take place. Every batch of the distillate is separated according to age, production cycle and aroma. It then matures slowly in terracotta containers and, during the storage period of at least five years, develops a fine soya aroma. Master blenders make sure that the characteristic, full flavour is preserved. The secret lies in the humid climate, the water from the Chishui, as well as in the distillation technique and maturing period.

At the World Spirits Award, there was double gold for Kweichou Moutai Du Fu Edition.
