Maison Ferrand – A commitment to tradition in more than 60 countries
In 1989, entrepreneur Alexandre Gabriel met the Pierre Ferrand family, one of the oldest cognac-producing families in France. His vision was to produce cognac following traditional methods, with a personal stamp, to emphasise the character of the Grande Champagne region and create a Premier Cru de Cognac. Tradition and passion, excellent locations, professional distillation, precise storage and careful blending set new standards for traditional products.
“A great cognac should reflect its terroir. Above all, good healthy grapes from the best vineyards are needed. Then the wines are carefully distilled on the yeast, and the brandy is left to mature in old barrels for many years. There are no short cuts, but it makes such a heavenly difference and the result tastes so much better that it is worth the effort! At MAISON FERRAND, there has always been a commitment to this level of diligence and patience.”
The production location is the Château de Bonbonnet in Ars, in the department of Charente, in the middle of the vineyards. In the cellars, the various spirits are stored in cognac, port wine, whisky, sauternes or calvados barrels. This ancient ‘double ageing’ procedure yields outstanding quality. Cognac is distilled in winter in ten small copper stills (maximum 25 hl). The characteristic gin is distilled in spring, the rum varieties of the Plantation brand name, which play an important role, come from the Caribbean.
Maison Ferrand is co-owner of the Domaine Logis d’Angeac, a traditional distillery dating back to 1776. It also includes 110 hectares of vineyards at the heart of the Grande Champagne region.
At the World Spirits Award, there was gold for Pierre Ferrand Ambré, Cognac Ferrand 10 Générations, Citadelle No Mistake Old Tom Gin and Plantation Original Dark.

Senft quality brandies – Experience, experimentation and success
In the picturesque Salemertal Valley in Southern Baden-Württemberg, just a few kilometres from Lake Constance, lies the Senft family’s farm. On the sunny side of the lake they have the ideal conditions for fruit-growing, as well as for the production of brandies, liqueurs, whisky and more. In their own orchards grow old apple varieties such as Cox-Orange and Elstar, small Williams pears, bright yellow Mirabelle plums and juicy peaches. Huge sour cherry trees and ancient damson trees also yield generous harvests, not to mention the fragrance of aromatic raspberries in late summer – the excellent products from the Senft farm speak for themselves.
As soon as the first fruit is ripe, the harvest begins, in which the tree-ripened fruit is harvested in three stages. Only hand-picked, fully ripened fruit is mashed. In order to retain the fine flavours of the fruit, the fresh mash is distilled immediately. After distillation, the distillates mature in stainless steel tanks, some also in barrique barrels, where the wood gives whisky, vodka and brandy their characteristic colour, aromatic richness and mild flavour.
The Senft family has been linked to fruit-growing and distillation for generations. They excel in their traditional knowledge, modern technology, their courage to experiment and their trust in the quality of the spirits and liqueurs. The business was founded in 1988. Herbert Senft also worked as a cellar master (for ‘Markgraf von Baden’ and ‘Winzerverein Hagnau’) from 1972 to 2010. The selection brandies with fruit extract have been on sale since 2002. The next year, new storage rooms were established in Salem-Rickenbach, and the licence as a bonded distillery was added in 2007. In 2012, the first Lake Constance (‘Bodensee’ in German) whisky expanded the wide range further still, and a vodka followed in 2013. It will be interesting to see what comes next at the Senft farm in the Salemertal Valley.
At the World Spirits Award, there was silver for Senft Bodensee Whisky and Senft Bodensee Williams Selektion, and bronze for Williams.

Limomacher: Regionally produced – socially labelled
Limomacher is a young Bregenz enterprise, according to their own definition “excellent in graphics, design, customer service, lemonade production, social involvement and coffee drinking”. However, a look at the brief biographies of the four-person team reveals quite a bit about their wide-ranging qualifications. All lemonades are produced regionally in Vorarlberg according to their own recipes. Short pathways right up until labelling – also labels for private customers and companies on request – reinforce sustainability, along with filling exclusively in glass bottles. The labelling, as well as the whole warehousing, are handled by Lebenshilfe Vorarlberg, a support organisation for people with disabilities. This is an indication that social thinking has been of great importance from the beginning.
At the beginning of 2018, the ‘Franz von Durst’ brand started in Spar shops, followed by the start-up shelf at Metro. The company developed a gin along with a tonic water for this purpose, as the first manufacturer in retailing that offers both as a one-stop shop. The gin that is also regionally produced goes perfectly with the tonic water and its animating and aromatic concept offers an exceptionally fruity drinking experience. Aside from the juniper base, five further botanicals play a role: angelica root provides a slight tanginess and supports the homogenous taste; orange peel is characterised by a range of aromatic substances and a fine hint of citrus; liquorice provides a complex sweetness with a slightly earthy note; elderberry has an intensive and refreshing taste; and hops gives it a special something.
“We are delighted that the Vorarlberg locals have received our gin so well and that we can expand step by step also into other provinces,” say the two young entrepreneurs.
At the World Spirits Award, gold was achieved by Franz von Durst Gin, and silver by Franz von Durst Dry Gin Wild.
