Ehrenwert GmbH: One recipe – two families
One recipe – two families. Each family has its own carefully guarded secret recipe, and with the Lücke family this remained in the hands of grandfather Heinz and later his son Dieter for many decades. Long enough, thought sons Thomas and Christian. In any case, it is the ‘Felsenfeuer’ herb liqueur that once made the Lücke Distillery one of the most important in Münsterland. After the war they continued the success story which first began in the 18th century, with this herb liqueur, using the recipe that Heinz Lücke worked out. In the 1950s everyone was talking about it, but in the 1960s the era of the distillery and the herb liqueur ended. But not for good – 60 years later it celebrated its resurrection with the ‘Freudenfeuer’.
Whilst searching for a distillery, Thomas and Christian kept to family tradition, as their grandmother was a Sasse, and the Sasses’ fine distillery in Schöppingen is still well known today. Following a traditional recipe from 1947 the new liqueur is distilled in small batches and is bottled by hand after a ten-day rest period. Ready to enjoy: neat and ice cold like in the time of our grandfathers, or smoother, on ice with lightly pressed orange zest, or as a basis for a long drink with tonic water or ginger ale. To old times and new friends!
At the World Spirits Award, there was gold for Freudenfeuer.

Gyulai Pálinka – A manufactory on historic soil
The first distillery was founded in 1731 in the city of Gyula: Baron Johannes Georg Harruckern of Upper Austria received the area as a gift from the Kaiser following his military career. The Baron brought German settlers to the area and promoted agriculture, trade and industry. Based on this long-standing tradition and supported by the latest technologies, the Gyulaer Palinka Manufaktúra has been developing here since 2008: the first series of distillates bears the name of Baron Harruckern and the design skilfully combines the past and future.
The master distillers aim to produce top quality in manageable quantities. The raw materials are top-quality fruits which are selected and washed by hand, ranging from traditional varieties to woodland and wild fruits. The importance of fruit brandy in the region is emphasised by the large spring festival with its Hungarian state-wide Pálinka competition.
The town of Gyula in the country of Békés at the gateway to Transylvania has plenty on offer for tourists, including its historical atmosphere with its brick castle and one of the most beautiful thermal baths in the region. Around a million visitors come to these healing springs each year and some of them also sample the soothing effects of a genuine Pálinka!
The products also impressed at the World-Spirits Award: gold and the title of “Best in Category” for the blackberry, gold for the quince and seven silver medals for various fruit brandies. This resulted in a ranking of 3rd place overall in the fruit brandy category as a “Distillery of the Year” (bronze) and classification as a “World-Class Distillery”.

Taunus Gin: Premium Dry Gin from the Taunus
Roland Braza describes his awaking as: “If parallel to the spiritual there is something like an alcoholic con-sciousness, then mine is made of gin. Sunsets where there were none and sunrises you wouldn’t expect. My silent companion in a glass was with me at the bar, next to me in bed in the morning and has enhanced many a balmy summer evening. The initial spark came at a distilling seminar in Austria, which my beloved wife had given me as a Christmas present many years before, and it led to me founding my own distillery. Laborious tests had the aim of creating a gin whose character expresses the naturalness of the Taunus forests. Fortu-nately, it worked!”
His experience as a hunter and the closeness to nature inspired Roland Braza to choose a woody, bitter aro-ma. Natural ingredients from the region are used. The most elementary ingredient is fresh, young spruce shoots which, together with additional organic botanicals and organic alcohol, create an original forest charac-ter. There are now three varieties – the Heritage Edition with the original recipe, the milder and at the same time ‘woodier’ Dark Forest Edition with a delicate hint of lemon balm and an aroma of mountain ash berries, as well as the Premium Dry Gin Golden Oak, which is stored in new oak barrels from Tokaj. All are produced on site in small batches at the Oberursel distillery and carefully bottled by hand.
At the World Spirits Award, there was silver for TAUNUS DRY GIN Ursel Dark Forest, TAUNUS DRY GIN Ursel Golden Oak and TAUNUS DRY GIN Ursel Heritage.
