Edelbrennerei Friedl Mair – Fruit classics from a professional amateur distiller
In the small community of Flaurling in the Inn Valley, between Innsbruck and Telfs, lives a successful amateur distiller. He discovered his love of spirits over 25 years ago – and this has now become his great passion. Friedl Mair started out with a small licensed distillery which has been successively expanded and enlarged over the years. Investment in modern technology has given rise to a high quality bonded distillery. Further training and curiosity eventually transformed a hobby into a profession! Success did not take long to come and Friedl Mair is now the proud recipient of numerous awards for his products – as well as winning the Tyrol State Prize twice.
His product range of around 50 items is based on ripe, high quality fruit: from pip fruits (especially apples, pears and quince) to stone fruits (in particular damson and as a cigar brandy, apricot, cherry, sour cherry, sloe, greengage and Mirabelle plum) as well as berries (cranberry, rowanberry, elderberry, raspberry, jostaberry, strawberry and juniper berry), pomace and grape marc and specialities such as gentian, carrot and Jerusalem artichoke. Following processing and distillation in the distilling column, these ‘treats for the taste buds based on traditional Tyrolean fruit distilling’ are left to mature in glass balloons. The brandies are sold in hand-painted bottles and on request can be packaged in gift boxes and wooden boxes.
Participation in the World Spirits Award brought classification as a Master Class Distillery 2013. There was gold for the quince, berry cuvée and muscatel grape and silver for the Williams red and damson cuvée.

Weingut Beate & Reinmund Reiterer: Versatile epicureans
Five generations of viticulture tradition, an inn and guest rooms – at first glance, it’s a normal Kitzeck vintner family. This is far from the truth, because the Reiterers practice a ‘winegrowing culture for the unconventional’, in a designed ambience with creative indulgences. In addition to traditional inn cuisine, Beate is keen on a contemporary interpretation, with high-quality products from the region such as trout mousse, raw venison ham, wild boar muffins and more. Reinmund’s passion is on the ‘liquid’ side. With their sensory awareness and internal sampling, they trained their three adult sons to become reliable partners when it comes to the evaluation of foods, wines and distillates. The latter have been produced for generations and also brought the winemaker and cellar master to gin: “Its multilayered and complex aspects, similar to a quality Sauvignon Blanc, attracted me from the very beginning.”
It started with a table still that a regular guest of the family had given as a gift years before. “A pharmacist’s scales for the dosages, a walk through the forest and a visit to a spice shop – that was it. After the first winter the table still remained in place, and in the second winter it became clear that I might be onto something. So I switched to a column still.” In the meantime, Distilled Dry Gin is produced using the pot still procedure, with time-consuming double distillation and a lot of manual work. The composition of 18 botanicals, along with the combination of maceration and percolation have one united aim: “Complexity! No aroma may be dominant, instead the gin should consist of a subtle whole!”

Ehrenwert GmbH: One recipe – two families
One recipe – two families. Each family has its own carefully guarded secret recipe, and with the Lücke family this remained in the hands of grandfather Heinz and later his son Dieter for many decades. Long enough, thought sons Thomas and Christian. In any case, it is the ‘Felsenfeuer’ herb liqueur that once made the Lücke Distillery one of the most important in Münsterland. After the war they continued the success story which first began in the 18th century, with this herb liqueur, using the recipe that Heinz Lücke worked out. In the 1950s everyone was talking about it, but in the 1960s the era of the distillery and the herb liqueur ended. But not for good – 60 years later it celebrated its resurrection with the ‘Freudenfeuer’.
Whilst searching for a distillery, Thomas and Christian kept to family tradition, as their grandmother was a Sasse, and the Sasses’ fine distillery in Schöppingen is still well known today. Following a traditional recipe from 1947 the new liqueur is distilled in small batches and is bottled by hand after a ten-day rest period. Ready to enjoy: neat and ice cold like in the time of our grandfathers, or smoother, on ice with lightly pressed orange zest, or as a basis for a long drink with tonic water or ginger ale. To old times and new friends!
At the World Spirits Award, there was gold for Freudenfeuer.
