Ehrenwert GmbH: One recipe – two families
One recipe – two families. Each family has its own carefully guarded secret recipe, and with the Lücke family this remained in the hands of grandfather Heinz and later his son Dieter for many decades. Long enough, thought sons Thomas and Christian. In any case, it is the ‘Felsenfeuer’ herb liqueur that once made the Lücke Distillery one of the most important in Münsterland. After the war they continued the success story which first began in the 18th century, with this herb liqueur, using the recipe that Heinz Lücke worked out. In the 1950s everyone was talking about it, but in the 1960s the era of the distillery and the herb liqueur ended. But not for good – 60 years later it celebrated its resurrection with the ‘Freudenfeuer’.
Whilst searching for a distillery, Thomas and Christian kept to family tradition, as their grandmother was a Sasse, and the Sasses’ fine distillery in Schöppingen is still well known today. Following a traditional recipe from 1947 the new liqueur is distilled in small batches and is bottled by hand after a ten-day rest period. Ready to enjoy: neat and ice cold like in the time of our grandfathers, or smoother, on ice with lightly pressed orange zest, or as a basis for a long drink with tonic water or ginger ale. To old times and new friends!
At the World Spirits Award, there was gold for Freudenfeuer.

Martin Miller’s Gin – Unmistakable thanks to Icelandic spring water
With a global presence in more than 55 countries on all continents, Martin Miller is the largest independent gin brand in the world – supremely award-winning and with a highly complex production. The concept originated from three friends: Martin Miller, David Bromige and Andreas Versteegh. With the super premium product at the turn of the millennium, they triggered a real gin wave and managed to create an unexpected renaissance for the spirit classic which had, at that time, rather faded away.
The unique selling point of Martin Miller’s Gin is that it is the only gin for which spring water from Iceland is used. This is much purer than any other mineral water, has a low concentration of minerals, and complements the botanicals perfectly. The classic taste profile boasts perfectly balanced hints of citrus fruits and juniper. In contrast to other gin brands, for which demineralised water is used, with Martin Miller’s Gin the surface tension is maintained, which prevents fast evaporation. The pleasing result is a soft, almost tender sensation in the mouth without any sort of sharpness.
Some tea production philosophy flows into the making of the gin, whereby the botanicals are carefully macerated over a longer period in order to extract every nuance of essential oils and aromas. This can be compared to haute cuisine, where more gentle methods of preparation are also preferred. Pure perfectionism – work and cost intensive, but the end result is a magical elixir for the new millennium.

Sash & Fritz – German vodka with a Russian soul
The ‘maker behind the brand’ is the well-known sommelier and wine merchant Peter Steger. During his more than 25 year-long career, he became interested in spirits and discovered his love of vodka – and so he formed the idea of creating an exclusive German vodka brand. Sash & Fritz combines Russian tradition with German precision and perfection. Only the best, carefully selected ingredients, such as 100% German wheat and clear spring water from the German Ore Mountains, are used in an elaborate production process (5 careful distillations and 5 gentle filterings) to create a manufactured vodka of the highest quality. The special, high quality flint glass bottle is particularly transparent and translucent, and was exclusively designed for the company.
The story behind the name: Sash stands for Alexander I Pavlovich Romanov, Emperor of Russia from 1801 to 1825, and Fritz for Frederick William III, King of Prussia from 1797. Theirs was a heartfelt friendship that lasted all their lives and went beyond the family relationship that existed between the Romanov and Hohenzollern families. The Russian Alexandrowka colony in Potsdam, which still exists today, dates back to the 1826 edict by King ‘Fritz’ on which it was founded in remembrance of his friend ‘Sash’ who had died a year before.
The concept bore fruit: the German vodka was awarded gold by the jury at the World Spirits Award.
