South Seas Distilleries: India’s pioneer of premium spirits

South Seas Distilleries is one of the most traditional distilleries in India and embodies over four generations of craftsmanship, combining local raw materials and a spirit of innovation with global quality standards. Founded in 1984 in Dahanu, Maharashtra, South Seas was one of the early pioneers of producing classic single malt whiskies in India. Early on, the distillery relied on high-quality pot still technology from Scotland and later built the largest copper pot stills in the country as well as an extensive maturation warehouse for spirits with depth and character.

The philosophy of the distillery is based on a simple but powerful credo: quality before quantity, substance before spectacle. This claim is reflected in products such as the Crazy Cock single malt whisky, a multi-matured India single malt that displays a rich aroma profile with warmth, complexity and finesse thanks to careful cask selection (ex-bourbon, ex-sherry).

However, South Seas goes beyond the classic whisky tradition. With Six Brothers Mahura, a centuries-old Indian spirit category has been revived. Presented as a luxurious heritage spirit with global ambition, they are an expression of India’s cultural depth and regional heritage – unique in this form worldwide. At a time when the premium spirits market is increasingly looking for authenticity and origin, South Seas is sending out a clear signal, namely that tradition and innovation can be combined to create spirits that delight experts and curious connoisseurs alike.

At the World Spirits Award, there was Gold for Six Brothers Mahura, and Silver for Crazy Cock The Single Malt Whisky – Madhuca 1 and Crazy Cock The Single Malt Whisky – DHUA.

This family business in the north of Spain is located just 80 kilometres from the French border. Present in the market for over 145 years, the business is now run by the fifth generation. Some of the 27 employees have been working with the family for over 40 years. The oldest product is Anís Las Cadenas, which already won awards in Paris in 1909.

As Spanish spirits are not as well-known as whisky, vodka, rum or tequila, customers are usually found in countries with Spanish inhabitants or descendants of Spanish immigrants. As a small business with no international branches, the contact with business partners is paramount, and they need to be well-supplied with information on the products.

One particular speciality of the region is Pacharán, an aniseed and sloe liqueur, which has been popular in Navarra since the Middle Ages. The name is derived from Basaran, a Basque word for sloe. In the 1950s it became more well-known with the aid of commercial production and marketing. Originally, wild sloes were used, but these days they are grown on plantations to meet the increasing demand. As a means of dealing with inferior imitations, a supervisory board for production was set up in 1988, which also awards the seal of quality and origin Denominación de Origen del Pacharán.

At the World Spirits Award, there was gold for Licor de Endrinas Basarana 20, silver for Pacharán Basarana Etiqueta Negra and Anís Las Cadenas, and bronze for Licor de Hierbas Las Cadenas.

Prevelon: Premium vodka by order of the Kremlin

Kremlin Premium Vodka was created as the official drink for all diplomatic receptions and banquets at the Kremlin and was intended as the hallmark of high-ranking events. The decision in favour of the most traditional Russian drink was unanimous. It was only produced on special order and in limited amounts. The first large batch of this ‘protocol’ vodka was ordered in February 1945 for the Yalta Conference. Kremlin Award Grand Premium came on the market in 2011 and is exported to 38 countries, and in many of them it holds the top position in the ultra-premium vodka category. Since 2016, the product range has included Kremlin Award Classic, which enjoys great popularity amongst all partners.

Two products have been added to the product range. Kremlin Award Organic is based on alcohol that is produced from the highest quality organic wheat, and on natural drinking water. The vodka passes through a multi-stage purification through pure birchwood charcoal. The alcohol for Kremlin Award Vintage is made from organic grains from the same harvest. The wheat grains are stored in a grain silo until they reach their physiological maturity in order to get a high-quality base product. The ‘luxury alcohol’ is then mixed with natural drinking water and, after purification, is granted a resting period. Production is limited to the year stated on the label.
