Georg Hemmeter – strawberry drinks with exceptional flavour guaranteed

The name Georg Hemmeter – a company of the Underberg Group – stands for innovative spirits, in particular the XUXU range. The fresh and fruity strawberry drink contains 66 percent fruit plus crystal-clear vodka, rounded off with a dash of lime. The harmony between the sweetness of the fruit and just 15% alcohol by volume is created using a special production method. XUXU Ten, the little luxury in a 250 ml aluminium bottle with only 10% alcohol by volume, is dressed to party – it is still relatively new to the market, yet is already at home in all the world’s top party venues.

Sash & Fritz – German vodka with a Russian soul

The ‘maker behind the brand’ is the well-known sommelier and wine merchant Peter Steger. During his more than 25 year-long career, he became interested in spirits and discovered his love of vodka – and so he formed the idea of creating an exclusive German vodka brand. Sash & Fritz combines Russian tradition with German precision and perfection. Only the best, carefully selected ingredients, such as 100% German wheat and clear spring water from the German Ore Mountains, are used in an elaborate production process (5 careful distillations and 5 gentle filterings) to create a manufactured vodka of the highest quality. The special, high quality flint glass bottle is particularly transparent and translucent, and was exclusively designed for the company.

The story behind the name: Sash stands for Alexander I Pavlovich Romanov, Emperor of Russia from 1801 to 1825, and Fritz for Frederick William III, King of Prussia from 1797. Theirs was a heartfelt friendship that lasted all their lives and went beyond the family relationship that existed between the Romanov and Hohenzollern families. The Russian Alexandrowka colony in Potsdam, which still exists today, dates back to the 1826 edict by King ‘Fritz’ on which it was founded in remembrance of his friend ‘Sash’ who had died a year before.

The concept bore fruit: the German vodka was awarded gold by the jury at the World Spirits Award.

Valamo Monastery Distillery – Absinthe from the far North

Distilling has been a traditional part of life in European monasteries ever since the first crusade in the 11th century, when the monks learned the craft in the Middle East. According to documents, the Valamo Monastery dates back to the 12th century and has been at the centre of orthodox culture in Finland for nearly 850 years. The only orthodox monastery in the country lies in the eastern Finnish landscape of South Savo, with extensive lakes and forests. In 2013, the distilling tradition was reawakened, today Valamo is the only monastery in the world which produces its own whisky, gin and absinthe. Liqueurs made from aromatic wild berries also mature in the quiet monastery. The ingredients come from the surrounding countryside – pure spring water, arctic plants and aromatic wild berries create the exceptional taste and quality of the products.

Fascinated and inspired by the mysterious reputation of absinthe, the monks decided to create their own absinthe in 2016. An old French book from the 19th century formed the basis for their extensive experiments. During the development processes, the monks collected information on authentic recipes and indigenous ingredients from around the world. After a lot of hard work, Valamo’s master distiller, Asko Ryynänen, created an absinthe which embodies a long history and mysterious quality – a traditional product with a modern touch, kept in striking ‘medicinal’ bottles.

At the World Spirits Award, there was silver for Valamo Mint and Valamo Gin.
