Taunus Gin: Premium Dry Gin from the Taunus

Roland Braza describes his awaking as: “If parallel to the spiritual there is something like an alcoholic con-sciousness, then mine is made of gin. Sunsets where there were none and sunrises you wouldn’t expect. My silent companion in a glass was with me at the bar, next to me in bed in the morning and has enhanced many a balmy summer evening. The initial spark came at a distilling seminar in Austria, which my beloved wife had given me as a Christmas present many years before, and it led to me founding my own distillery. Laborious tests had the aim of creating a gin whose character expresses the naturalness of the Taunus forests. Fortu-nately, it worked!”

His experience as a hunter and the closeness to nature inspired Roland Braza to choose a woody, bitter aro-ma. Natural ingredients from the region are used. The most elementary ingredient is fresh, young spruce shoots which, together with additional organic botanicals and organic alcohol, create an original forest charac-ter. There are now three varieties – the Heritage Edition with the original recipe, the milder and at the same time ‘woodier’ Dark Forest Edition with a delicate hint of lemon balm and an aroma of mountain ash berries, as well as the Premium Dry Gin Golden Oak, which is stored in new oak barrels from Tokaj. All are produced on site in small batches at the Oberursel distillery and carefully bottled by hand.

At the World Spirits Award, there was silver for TAUNUS DRY GIN Ursel Dark Forest, TAUNUS DRY GIN Ursel Golden Oak and TAUNUS DRY GIN Ursel Heritage.

TERAI India Dry Gin: Indian contribution to the gin scene

Terai is a belt of fertile swamplands stretching along the foothills of the Himalayas. This land irrigated by springs and rivers, with its lush and fresh vegetation, is reflected in the carefully manufactured TERAI Gin. The botanicals are sourced mainly from Khari Baoli – Asia’s largest herb and spice market in Delhi.

Since the 14th century, Terai has been the homeland of the Swarup founding family, who have a long history of farming in the region. The distillery in Behror, Rajasthan, was one of the first in independent India, founded by Shekhar Swarup, a fourth-generation distiller. Equipped with a customised Carl copper pot still, the gin is manufactured in a traditional one-shot London Dry procedure. The basic distillate is a rice grain distillate from the neighbouring family distillery, enabling a strictly controlled grain-to-glass process.

The result is a modern gin, on the one hand rooted in the tradition of London Dry Gin, and on the other with an authentically Indian flavour profile. Apart from juniper berries, coriander, fennel, lemon peel, orange peel, lavender, rose, angelica and iris root, it also contains a special component: the ‘holy herb’ Tulsi (Indian basil). In the spiritual life of many Hindus, it plays a role in religious ceremonies and is associated with many legends surrounding its divine protection. This shrub with delicate leaves stands in countless house entrances or courtyards in India.

At the World Spirits Award, silver was awarded to TERAI India Dry Gin.

2B Hemp Gin: Styrian gin experience

Two visionaries, Armin Breinl (doctor, drink creator, musician) and Wolfgang Thomann (gin maker), have created a completely new gin experience with real hemp powder: 2B HEMP GIN (inspired by AEIJST). On 17th November 2018, the two invited guests to the first tasting of 2B HEMP GIN in the AEIJST GIN distillery in St. Nikolai in the Sausal Valley.

Made from organic juniper berries, this innovative gin has an impressive, mild and fruity taste and a typical hemp note. Due to its unique aroma, it not only tastes good neat, but also creates a ‘wow’ effect in cocktails – as proven in the long drink Styrian Pale Gin AEIJST refined with 2B HEMP.

For thousands of years, hemp has been grown as a valuable plant, be it for rope, fabric, paper or as an active ingredient in ointments and tinctures. Hemp has always been highly valued for its medicinal properties, yet recently has been demonised as an addictive drug and has suffered under its ensuing prohibition, originating in the USA. These days hemp is regaining importance and is being used more as a luxury food as well as in medicine as a therapeutic agent.

The Lifestyle Trading company, run by Armin Breinl, is an innovative beverage producer, which is already known amongst trade professionals for its sugar-free ‘func- tional fruit drinks’.
