Donau Origin: Gins from Bavaria with symbolic power

The young gin manufacturing enterprise in Oberhausen on the Danube defines itself thus: “We have made it our mission to reflect the way of life of our beautiful Bavarian homeland in expressive gins. Regionality, sustainability and the highest quality are just as important as honest, solid manual labour. These values are also reflected in the company logo. The three waves stand for the gins, the four fields for the founders and the shape for a glance into the pot still. The Danube is the source of our origins.”

After preparing for a good two years, at the beginning of 2021 an old machinery hall with an adjoining gravel area was turned into a distillery with a garden, local fruit trees and a meadow with two populations of bees. Everything is produced by hand at a slow pace and with attention to detail. “Pumps and plastic are banned entirely.” During the maceration of the botanicals, they work according to secret recipes, only using organically certified raw ingredients. Distilling is gentle on the aromas in a 200-litre still, then the distillates rest for over three months in a stainless-steel barrel.

The drinking strength is 42 volume percent, “because apart from the perfect ratio of aroma, texture and strength, it is also the answer to the question of life, the universe and all the rest.” Those who would like to find out more should read Douglas Adams’ cult novel ‘The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy’. After maturation, the gins are filtered by means of gravity and given a last quality check before they are filled and sealed in bottles with a high-quality design.

At the World Spirits Award, silver was awarded to MORGENtau, and bronze to SOMMERwind and FICHTENgold.

Mack Brands: Finvara – Irish Whiskey

Finvara is produced by master distiller David F. Hynes and his team at the Great Northern Distillery (GND) in Dundalk. The town has access to the purest water from the nearby Cooley Mountains, which is why brewing and distilling has been carried out in the region since the late 17th century. Dundalk’s large municipal distillery was in operation between 1708 and 1926. Two historic buildings still exist and are now home to the County Museum and Dundalk Library.

Only Irish malted and unmalted barley is used for the Finvara brand whiskey. The mash is traditionally distilled three times in classic copper pot stills and matured in different types of cask, including American white oak bourbon casks and Spanish sherry casks. The name Finvara goes back to the legendary king of an enchanted kingdom. As a master of transformation, he could take on any form he wanted. His image on the label leads you off on a mystical journey into bygone times and mysterious worlds.

Conte Camillo offers ready-to-drink Negroni – perfect for the fast pace of life in the city. Its origin lies in the northern Italian Alps, where master distiller Alessandro Francoli is responsible for the harmonious combination of gin, vermouth and bitters in a small mountain distillery in the Aosta Valley. Each component is made separately with regional ingredients. The gin is based on mineral-rich water from the Acqueverdi waterfall, combined with juniper from 2,400 metres above sea level, gentian, wild mallow and mountain roses. Herbs such as the small-flowered mountain mint and the aromatic mountain thyme are used for the vermouth. In Bitter Artigianale, wormwood, gentian and elderflower join other aromas such as orange peel and liquorice root.

At the World Spirits Award 2025, Gold went to Ready-to-drink Negroni, and Silver to Finvara Triple Distilled Irish Whiskey.

Kweichow Moutai: China’s ‘national schnapps’ on the rise

Baijiu is the most popular alcoholic drink in China and Moutai the most famous brand, with a similar status to vodka in Russia or tequila in Mexico. Its origins go back over 2,000 years to the time of Emperor Wu of Han. These days, the national drink is frequently served at official state banquets and is used as the official state gift. Its protected source is the village of Maotai in the Guizhou province on the banks of the Chishui, the Red River. These days, more than 30,000 tons of the 53 percent alcohol Moutai are produced. In cooperation with Camus, a limited edition was launched as an homage to the greatest poets: after Li Bai in 2013, Du Fu followed in 2018. The elegant bottle showing a painting of a poem is made from the finest porcelain.

Traditional methods are used for the distillation of regional raw materials: organic sorghum and wheat and the best water. Fermentation takes place at high temperatures. During the production process, which takes a year, fresh grain is added twice to the boilers, then several boiling and fermentation processes take place. Every batch of the distillate is separated according to age, production cycle and aroma. It then matures slowly in terracotta containers and, during the storage period of at least five years, develops a fine soya aroma. Master blenders make sure that the characteristic, full flavour is preserved. The secret lies in the humid climate, the water from the Chishui, as well as in the distillation technique and maturing period.
